What is calligraphy today?
Addressing himself to this vital question, Claude Mediavilla takes us from the origins of visual representation to contemporary abstract art, via the invention of writing and the various transformations which Roman letterforms have undergone over the centuries in Europe. Paleographic sources are given for each period along with model alfabets to help the reader analyze and reproduce each style, illustrated with interpretations of present -day calligraphers (Hermann Zapf, John Stevens, Werner Schneider, Julian Waters, David Howells, Raphael Boguslav, etc.).
In Renaissance times calligraphy was both readable and beautiful. Little by little, however, calligraphy's gestural aspects have become increasingly important, educing it's literal content and bringing it ever closer to the history of graphic signs. Claude Mediavilla gides us through the forest of styles in each period, explaining his sources of inspriration and aesthetic choices with the help of a spectacular array of illustrations. Twenty-two model alphabets provide a detailed analysis of the forms and principles of construction of typical styles, from the Roman majuscule alphabet to the English round hand which so strongly marked the industrial period up until the contemporary calligrapic revival.
